Dr John Hall urges church leaders to “be sensitive … [with those who] are traumatised by their ordeals … don’t push them too hard … the first thing to do is to listen to them”

His advice is to preach Christ and the love of God; use biblical illustrations; love and encourage God’s people; praying that they will trust and submit to God’s will and hope in the coming glory.

Dr John Hall says that to care pastorally for those in distress involves praying, visiting, reminding people of Bible truths, and practical aid as you are able to give it.

“Be willing to listen to them, allow them time to reach their own conclusions as they are dealing with their troubles.”

Doing good to all is a principle that applies to every believer when it comes to helping others affected by disaster. Pastors and elders have the specific task of bringing God’s word but this doesn’t mean having no involvement in practical matters, far from it, says Dr John Hall.

To help those affected by disaster, church leaders need to learn the Scriptures, seek wisdom, serve, be prepared learn from their own troubles and love those they seek to help. Also, having an awareness other helps and pitfalls within your own culture. Then, seek the Holy Spirit’s help and power to truly be like Christ in the way they help others.

To be prepared for disasters pastors and church leaders need to have a good knowledge of the Bible, seek wisdom to apply it and be prepared to experience trials and suffering themselves. Dr John Hall says that these are the best and only way to be of real help to those in need.
